NOAA and the weather forecasters on your local news channel say yes, it's here! I know, your calendar says March 20th is the first day of spring this year. Here's the scoop. There are Meteorological Seasons and Astronomical Seasons. Most people define seasons by using observable natural phenomena to mark time. The natural rotation of the earth around the sun forms the basis of the astronomical calendar. However, variations in these events make it difficult to establish and compare climatological statistics from season to season. Thus, meteorological seasons were created. Meteorological Spring began March 1st and ends on the last day of May and is based on the annual temperature cycle, not astronomical events. Find out more about this topic at
